Billy’s composition, ‘Another day’ is an evocative piece that explores the day as it moves through morning, noon and night. His lyrical composition has words that evoke many images as one sings them.

In the second verse, we encounter ‘the man with the funny hat’: so expressive, triggering rich images in one’s mind as one listens to or sings these words. Who is this man? What does the funny hat look like? Does it make us laugh? Do we wonder why someone wears a funny hat? Such is the depth of thought a short phrase can elicit.

Of him, Billy says: “As far as the man with the funny hat was concerned, I was thinking about the variety of people that there are in the world – including the odd ones! – and that God made us all. The diversity we see around us (including the world’s eccentrics) make life interesting and different every day. That’s very much part of God’s creation.”

The entire piece evokes many emotions and thoughts about life and what we encounter as we pass through the day.

The music composition enriches the image of the sunsets. Watching the sunset over the African veld, or from the banks of one of its huge rivers, or somewhere in the Karoo or wherever you might imagine… one is overwhelmed and wonderstruck by the beauty of our world.

Such sunsets speak to the end and the beginning of life, and the rituals we go through each day, sometimes not even noticing from where the natural light is coming.

Billy puts it beautifully in the final verse of his song:

“At the end of the day
when our work is done,
And we see the sky turn glowing red,
And we feel our strength
ebb with the sun
And we long for food and think of bed:
We see the sun set in the west
And count the hours ’til it’s light again,
And we trust He’ll watch us as we rest
And keep us safe ’til then.”
